A legend in the making

The Toyota Legend 45 is part beauty, part beast. If you're interested in a tar-taming workhorse, look no further.

In a league of its own, the Toyota Hilux Legend 45 3.0 D-4D has the brawn and brains to make even an avid feminist a fan.

When the going gets tough, the Legend 45’s manoeuvrability and agility make for a stable yet rugged ride.

Its no-nonsense look is like love at first sight. The colour-coded front bumper, grille and headlights large enough to light up Newcastle after dark, and are guaranteed to make your heart skip a beat – if you’re into that kind of thing.

Adding to an almost complete package, the Legend 45 is equipped to handle just about anything.

Power steering, air-conditioning, electronically adjustable windows, a multi-information display and an audio system complete with Bluetooth, USB and iPod inputs make the Hilux that much more legendary.

Personally, I thought the tech-savvy display and bold audio system took away from the overall appeal of the bakkie, but out on the open road, all was forgiven.

On an even playing field, I didn’t expect such a masculine looking machine to be such a quiet, comfortable ride. Its rigid body eliminates vibration and noise, making you forget you’re driving a bakkie made to endure non-stop punishment.

As you rule the road, you can feel the power behind the impeccably designed double cab. The dust hardly has time to settle as you tackle the untamed terrain and tar.

After consulting a pamphlet on safety features I know less than nothing about, I simply have to add that ‘the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)* regulates the hydraulic pressure of the brakes, and a load-sensing proportioning and bypass valve optimises the effectiveness of the rear brakes’ (For the record, I have no idea what any of that means, but I love the sound of it anyway).

The design and thought behind every hallmark feature is evident as you admire all the Legend 45 has to offer. Fuel economy shouldn’t even be a question if you’re interested in a set of wheels like this.

After taking a tour through town, I don’t even mind the fact that 1.76-metre wide bakkie makes parking an even tougher terrain to tame. I’m not afraid to admit that parking isn’t my forte, so if you’re anything like me, running an errand will involve a spot on the other side of the lot.

Although not as nifty as a Smart Car or as fast as a Ferrari, the Legend 45 immortalises Toyota’s mantra ‘Lead the Way’.

This vehicle is a perfect culmination of beauty and beast. The exterior roars while the interior whispers. It’s everything a farm road-loving, town-taming person could ever ask for.

If the Toyota Hilux Legend 45 isn’t dipped in mud, you’re doing it wrong!
