Is the illicit sex trade rampant in Newcastle’s CBD?
Complaints from residents have indicated a problem area is around the York and Ayliff Streets intersection.
Residents in the area are frustrated with the present situation.
“The prostitutes pick up clients and take them behind the postboxes. They even laid out a sheet of cardboard as a makeshift bed,” stated resident, Rita Grundy (real name withheld).
A quick inspection revealed the area behind the York Street postboxes was littered with used condoms and wrappers.
The information outlined by Grundy was given over on Monday afternoon to Captain Jabulani Ncube, spokesman for Newcastle SAPS.
“There is no set guideline for suspected prostitution, however in South Africa it is illegal for both buying and selling sex, as well as related activities such as brothel keeping and pimping,” he concluded.
