UPDATE: Witness account of the Sportscene armed robbery on Scott Street in Newcastle

Yesterday (May 23), Sportscene on Scott Street was robbed.

The incident took place at around 9.30am, when four suspects entered the store posing as customers.

According to a staff member, one of the suspects casually started talking with the manager and other staff members, while the other three men detained the customers and staff.

“I was busy talking and laughing with one of the men while the others were holding the customers and the rest of the staff members at gunpoint.  When I realised what had happened, the man I was talking to also pulled a gun on me,” said a staff member.

Three customers and two staff members were held in the store, while one suspect escorted the store manager to the storeroom at the back of the store,  where she was tied up while the area was ransacked.

The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cellphones, clothing and footwear, and are currently at large and armed.

Police members were on the scene almost immediately, and are currently investigating the robbery.
