MUST READ: Litter heaps up behind the Department of Health (DOH) building

Vagrancy and prostitution have been blamed for the mess off of Harding Street.

The littered state of a CBD alleyway has residents fearing for their health.

Employees of a company on Voortrekker Street have expressed concern at the condition of an alleyway linking the Home Affairs parking lot with Harding Street.

This alleyway is situated behind the Department of Health (DOH) building.

Employees said the blue municipal container was literally overflowing with refuse, resulting in heaps of trash choking the alleyway and nearby drains.

Vagrancy and prostitution were also apparently rife in the area.

Residents stated there was often burned refuse in the alleyway in the mornings, the evidence of late-night activities occurring there.

The municipality provided official response on this matter.

Officials confirmed the container bin was currently being rented by the DOH for its own use, and was serviced once a week on a Thursday.

“The problem with this particular container is that DOH should provide the municipality with a safe storage area for the container. This will prevent members of public from abusing the container.”

The municipality said it had already served DOH written notice to this effect.

A site inspection on Tuesday morning showed that while the majority of litter had been cleared, problems remained a shameful sight to behold.
