The protesters gathered at Newcastle High School at the corner of Allen and Hospital Streets, and made their way to the Newcastle Provincial Hospital.

The march was to raise awareness on various issues such as employment of more doctors, improvement of the conditions of the hospital and improvement in the care of patients being treated for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

According to EEF Councillor, Mongezi Twala, the march was conducted as part of the EFF’s national campaign to protest poor service delivery.

“There aren’t enough doctors here at the hospital. Many times we have to go to the clinics in Madadeni and Dannhauser, which is difficult,” explained Cllr Twala.

One of the attendees of the march, who wished to remain anonymous, also expressed her concern at the situation in local provincial hospitals.

“It is worrying to know there are not enough doctors, or that we might not get proper care when we get admitted to one of our provincial hospitals. This is why it is important for us to stand together for change!” she exclaimed.
