Officials said a detailed maintenance plan had been drafted, and employees were working from suburb to suburb attending to as many faults as possible.

However, the darkness has threatened to win the battle.

Recent complaints regarding non-functioning street lights extended to include Rooibok Avenue, Hutten Heights and Lacerta Place, Paradise.

Residents of the latter are concerned with their safety as a result.

Given the proximity of Lacerta Place to the banks of the Ncandu River, itself overgrown, homeowners expressed concern that complaints to the municipality had not yet been addressed.

This has mirrored complaints from other suburbs over recent months.

In an official response, the municipality said that although it conducted an annual audit on street lights, it depended on the community to report lighting faults.

This would ensure problems were dealt with swiftly.

Asked how soon repairs were conducted after street light faults were reported, the municipality said the turnaround time was meant to be within seven days.

“Due to lack of funds, we are battling with spares and cable faults.”

When asked how the cost to replace a street light compared to systems such as Light Emitting Diode (LED) systems, the municipality said a consultant would first have to be appointed.

“We have to go through a study to get accurate readings.”
