#MotoringMonday – hybrid cars lead the race to the future

Hybrid vehicles have not gained the ground many predicted they would.

In an ever-changing world, hybrid cars are gaining popularity.

No longer does fossil fuel rule the roost, instead slowly making way for electricity and other greener technologies.

Even race cars are adapting to cleaner systems.

The Toyota TS050 – which combines a gasoline engine with lithium ion batteries – joins the grid at the 2018-2019 FIA World Endurance Championship.

This series begins with the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) on May 5.

Although the hybrid trend is still yet to catch on fully in South Africa, there are numerous models on the market for the environmentally conscious.

These include the Lexus CT200h and the Honda Jazz Hybrid.

In addition, second hand hybrid vehicles have also become common on the local vehicle market.

Popular sale sites feature a moderate amount of hybrids for sale.

However, think before you shell out on a hybrid vehicle – here’s why:

One of the biggest obstacles impeding the rise of the hybrid is charging infrastructure.

Both overseas and abroad, public chargers are rare or even non-existent.

Factor in electricity network issues countrywide, and it easily puts off potential buyers.

Another problem is the sheer cost of hybrid vehicles, compared to conventional fuel vehicles.

While hybrids might cost less in terms of fuel, it’s a rather long-term saving.

The battery packs/ systems within these types of car can also be expensive to maintain or replace.

This certainly puts a spanner in the proverbial works.
