MUST READ: Stormy forecast for Privet Street

Storm water drain covers lie broken and misplaced along Privet Street.

Residents of Privet Street, Arbor Park, are fed up with so-called poor service delivery.

Over the past few weeks, residents expressed building outrage over damaged roads, missing storm water drain covers and general neglect by the municipality.

These problems have worsened over a five-month period.

Towards the end of March, a resident contacted the Newcastle Advertiser for help in getting the municipality to replace storm water drain covers on Privet Street.

He was concerned a child may fall into the open drain.

Advertiser reporters took photographs of three uncovered storm water drains then, and another set of photos in the beginning of April.

To date, there has been no visible action from the municipality.

“We’ve had no one out here to deal with these problems to date,” said another irate resident.

He explained that although municipal workers flushed out the drains of leaves, concrete covers had not yet been replaced or even moved back into position.

The resident contacted the municipality but also received no feedback.

“If someone falls into the drain, there will be big problems.”

In addition, residents accused the municipality of digging up a portion of the tar road at the Maple Street intersection.

With tension building, the community is plotting its own action.

“We are meeting soon as residents of the area. If the municipality just fixes the covers and road before someone gets hurt, we will be happy.”

Despite weeks given within which to take action or provide response, the municipality failed to comment on the matter by the time of going to print.

In the meantime, residents’ tempers continue to fray.
