MUST READ: Airport facility is almost complete

The completion of the project is another step closer to scheduled flights between Newcastle and Johannesburg.

Work on the new airport facility is effectively complete.

According to municipal officials, the only work outstanding was the so-called odds and ends, including the snag list of items for the contractor to resolve.

This meant tenants could be moving in within the month.

According to staff on site, recent additions to the facility included a CCTV camera system, a paved and painted parking area, phone lines and a state-of-the-art X-ray scanner.

The high-tech device was shipped from America recently.

From the hangar side of the facility, visitors to the airport terminal building will find the arrivals section first, including local management offices and baggage claim.

The middle of the facility is home to ticketing and departures.

To the right of this is office space for rental companies and restaurants, plus a security room, the baggage check section, exhibition space and the Technology Hub information office.

“This project is really something to be proud of,” one official commented.

Completion of the airport project is a welcome step for staff, and has also attracted significant investment from local flight enthusiasts.

It has also brought Newcastle one step closer to scheduled flights.

Things began to take off in September last year, following a R36-million investment from the European Union to develop the terminal facility.

Funding was secured by the provincial Department of Treasury.

The project hit a major snag towards the end of 2017, when brick shortages and staff-related problems forced a delay in completion until the end of February.

Officials concluded they were proud to have bounced back from this.

Airlink is expected on site shortly to assess the work done, after which Newcastle will know if flights between town and O.R. Tambo International Airport are finally a reality.
