A taxi driver was arrested and charged for several criminals offences, after members of the Utrecht SAPS Sector Team were conducting crime prevention duties along the P483 (oSizweni/Utrecht) road.

According to the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Department, the arrest was made at around 3pm by Constable S.B. Phakathi, Constable H.S. Oliphant and Constable S.K. Mahlambi.

“These three SAPS members stopped a white Toyota Hi-Ace kombi with registration number NN 9219,and immediately noticed there were school children crammed inside the kombi.”

The members then requested the driver to produce his drivers licence, to which he admitted he did not have one.

The driver then also allegedly admitted to not having a Public Drivers Permit, and when police checked the license disc of the vehicle, it was discovered that the vehicle was last licensed in 2007.

“Too add to the charges, police noticed the taxi held a total of 29 passengers, excluding the driver.”

The driver, a 26-year-old male, was then placed under arrest.

He also recently appeared before the Utrecht Magistrate’s Court and was granted R1 000 bail.

“The work done by these members is applauded because it would have been a disaster, should the vehicle have been involved in a collision. Obviously a large number of lives would have been lost.”

“The arrest will once again send out a clear and sound message that contravention of any traffic related laws will not at any stage be tolerated.”
