ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) recently released its third quarter operational update.

In this report, the company noted salient points including an increase of six per cent in local sales, despite difficult domestic trading conditions.

Other notable areas were increased export sales and an 11 per cent increase in liquid steel production.

But what does this mean from a local perspective?

That insight was given by AMSA’s Newcastle Works in a formal statement this week.

The responses have helped place the third quarter report into context.

An aforementioned liquid steel production increase was said to have been offset by lower production at Newcastle following cut-backs.

This was reportedly due to high input costs and poor market conditions.
