Six men arrested for rape, murder and robbery

Six men were arrested by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for two rapes, a murder and an attempted murder.

Investigations began in October, when the FCS received a case regarding two women who were both hijacked, threatened with a firearm, taken behind Meadowlands Estate (Rumelin Stadium) and raped, and their cellphones stolen.

With both incidents taking place a week apart, the FCS Unit suspected it was done by the same perpetrators who lived in either Madadeni Section 3 or Section 4.

Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube said a few days after these two incidents, a murder was committed.

A man had allegedly parked his vehicle behind the stadium and had a female companion in the car with him at the time.

They were approached by a man who shot and killed the male motorist, before taking the car and sped off with the woman still in the vehicle.

However, the car overturned during the escape, allowing the woman to flee to safety.

The suspect then stopped another motor vehicle, where he shot the driver and stole the car.

The motorist sustained major injuries. A case of murder and attempted murder were opened at the Madadeni Police Station.

The FCS Unit’s investigations lead them to Madadeni Section 5, where a man from Empangeni was found with a .45 caliber pistol in his possession.

He admitted to killing the man whose vehicle he had stolen and overturned, as well as raping a woman.

Following the man’s arrest and further investigations, the FCS Unit were led to the five remaining suspects.

The men attempted to escape to Mondlo and Msinga, but were apprehended.

Three firearms were recovered, as well as the victims’ property.

Using the recovered firearms and recovered property as evidence, all six suspects were linked to the rapes, robbery, murder and attempted murder incidents.

They will appear at the Madadeni Court soon.
