SALGA goes local for its provincial assembly

KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu addresses local government officials at the annual SALGA, Provincial Members Assembly held on November 2.

The South African Local and Government Association (SALGA) held its annual KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Members’ Assembly (KZNPMA) from November 2 to 3 at Vulintaba Country Hotel Conference room.

The KZNPMA has served as a platform where local government leaders, analyse the state of local government at a strategic and holistic level. They are a body that engages and networks as colleagues in a spirit that fosters creativity.

Dignitaries in attendance included the KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu, MEC’s of Local Government, mayors, speakers, chief whips, traditional leaders, municipal managers, chief financial officers, CEOs of development agencies, SALGA leadership and senior government officials from KZN.

“It is prudent to have a session like this to review how far we have come, and what lies ahead – the challenges that need to be overcome, and to address all areas,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu further stated that the important aspect of the assembly was the emphasis on the relationship between local and provincial government.

“We will not be able to build a stable society or governments with partisanship,” he said.

He encouraged members not to harbour partisanship within governments in order to assist the communities in KZN.

“We were entrusted with leadership, let us help the people, no matter their orientation or political choices,” he concluded.
