The Newcastle Municipality officially put its October Transport Month Campaign into motion on October 5.

The campaign forms part of a national project, where the municipality aimed to reduce fatalities and injuries on Newcastle’s roads.

The campaign was launched at the Allen Street and N11 intersection, under the theme: Together we move South Africa forward.

To ensure all participants were involved, the municipality’s Community Safety Department partnered with the Taxi Association, EMRS, SAPS, RTI, ER24 and the Amajuba Driving School Association.

“We are using this month to sensitise the community to road safety. Several lives were being lost on the roads, and if we as the municipality do not intervene, these losses would not end,” said Acting Strategic Executive Director, Dr Dumisani Thabethe.

While Dr Thabethe urged motorists to practise safe driving, he believed commuters and pedestrians also needed to be vigilant and be made aware of road hazards.

Deputy Mayor, Dudu Sibiya extended her gratitude to all the traffic officers who assisted in the campaign on Thursday, and for their daily contribution to ensure road safety was maintained.

“We understand your job is a difficult one, as your safety is not guaranteed. But because you have dedicated your lives to this cause, continuing to work tirelessly, the Newcastle Municipality is proud of you,” she said.

Cllr Sibiya and Dr Thabethe worked alongside traffic officials at the launch, interacting with motorists and spreading the message of safety.

Despite the poor weather conditions leaving the participants soaked from the rain, the municipality was determined to drive the campaign towards safer roads for all motorists and pedestrians.
