Mayor provides official response – again

Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi signs the protest memorandum on August 25, with Fred van Dyk looking on.

Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi has responded personally to a media inquiry.

The questions submitted in the inquiry centered on concerns raised by the driving force of August’s public protest, Fred van Dyk.

Chief of these was his claim that he received no feedback within the deadline of September 15.

In response, Cllr Nkosi stated the request made by van Dyk was for the municipality to respond through the media, which it had done.

He failed to account for why no written reply was given to van Dyk.

Asked if the municipality felt a media briefing (held on September 14) was sufficient to address ratepayers’ concerns, Cllr Nkosi replied a comprehensive response was sent to van Dyk.

This was not true according to Van Dyk.

He reportedly received no word from the municipality until he phoned Cllr Nkosi’s office himself, and was eventually told to pick up his response from there.

Van Dyk also said he received no invite to the briefing.

Despite being specifically labelled a media briefing, Cllr Nkosi September 14’s meeting was not closed to any person, and stakeholders interested would have requested to discuss items in the protest memorandum.

“Even now, they can still request for that meeting.”

Cllr Nkosi said there was no request for said meeting from van Dyk, but also stated he was not in the habit of engaging in a protest meeting, but rather a formal one.

“The Mayor is always available to engage when requested to do so. In the protest gathering, the Mayor was requested only to receive a memorandum which we did.”

According to van Dyk however, he was informed a meeting with Cllr Nkosi could only be arranged in October owing to the Mayor’s prior engagements.

He has since hosted a public meeting of his own, to discuss the way forward.
