PACKING A PUNCH: Karateka kick it up a notch

JKA karateka watch on as Karl Schutte and Mthunzi Mbatha spar in kumite.

Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA is in full-on preparation mode.

The regional body hosted a senior training session on September 2 at Arbor Park Primary School, ahead of the NKZN JKA Regionals which takes place this Saturday at the Show Grounds.

The two-hour session consisted of both kata and kumite.

Based on the criteria and rules used in Provincial and National JKA championships, the session was followed by a table official, judge and referee course to ensure smooth running of the competition.

“This means competitors are given fair, competent and professional decisions during the tournament,” explained instructor, Sensei Johan Swart.

Nine JKA dojos representing NKZN JKA, namely Dundee, Hluhluwe, Ladysmith, Newcastle, Paulpietersburg, Piet Retief, Pongola, Volksrust and Vryheid, will send 200 entrants into the Regionals this weekend.

The event promises to be action-packed and a treat for karate fans.

“We thank senior karateka and management of NKZN JKA for giving up their time, and for all the hard work they’ve put in behind the scenes to make this event successful.”
