Competitors sprinted for the finish at Newcastle Corner and CANSA’s five kilometre Fun Walk on Saturday.

The mall is currently celebrating its first birthday.

Entrants began at 10am from the corner of Allen Street and the R34 Memel Road, tracing a five kilometre path back to the finish line.

Dumezweni Mchunu was the first man over the line.

Mchunu said he was ‘feeling good’ following the race, and praised organisers on a good route and suitable refreshments for competitors.

He also said weather conditions were perfect for running.

The first women over the line were Zelda and Charnique Oosthuizen, who formed a group alongside Zelme van der Walt.

Congratulations to these athletes on a fine race!

The first 100 finishers on the day received a pie and coke, sponsored by Sasol, bottled water from Thirsti and fresh muffins from SuperSpar.

Wors rolls and hamburgers were also on sale.

Local musicians also took to the stage to buoy competitors with song, while groups such as Dundee Diehards entertained residents.

Cansa representatives set up a stand where locals could spray or shave their hair.
