SPORT: Newcastle Legends team seeks victory

The tournament will see players over the age of 50 in the teams.

Devoted soccer enthusiasts have much to look forward to during the month of September.

Newcastle will play host to a soccer tournament, where 11 teams from various parts of KwaZulu-Natal will compete for the top spot.

However, the tournament will not be for up and coming soccer players, but rather the golden oldies, as the tournament will see players over the age of 50 in the teams.

“Currently there is only one over-50 team in Newcastle and we have to travel out of town to play,” said Rammy Singh of Newcastle Legends.

Having criss-crossed KZN playing games, the Newcastle Legends have now brought the soccer action home.

“The last time we played in Newcastle was in September 2016.”

Determined to defend their reputation at their home ground, the Newcastle Legends will have to compete against Pietermaritzburg Legends, Pietermaritzburg Central, Durban Central, Durban South, Chatsworth, Reservoir Hills, Ispingo, KwaMashu, Phoenix and Inanda.

The games will take place at Fernwood Sports Grounds from 9am on September 16.

The Newcastle Legends encourage the community to support the local team in its quest for victory, and to witness some spectacular games.
