Spreading the winter warmth

Nelisiwe Khoza is all smiles after receiving her donation.

As Newcastillians keep the winter chills at bay in the comfort of their warm homes, there are those who struggle to endure the winter cold.

In the hope of reducing the hardships the less fortunate have to endure, the Newcastle Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry has yet again undertaken its annual Winter Warmth Campaign.

On Sunday, July 9, 100 families benefited from the organisation’s generosity when the Chamber donated rice, canned foods, blankets, cooking oil and beanies to community members from Dick’s Halt, oSizweni.

A further donation was made to Kusaselihle Crèche, where the Chamber donated blankets for the children.

“This was a collective effort from the entire Chinese community and while this donation brought temporary relief, we are looking at ways of starting a project which can help the community become more self-sufficient,” said Chinese Chamber of Commerce’s chairperson, Alex Liu.

Dick Halt’s residents were ecstatic about the donation, and sang songs of thanks to the volunteers who had brought the items.
