NEWCASTLE CBD – A 78-year-old woman was robbed in Allen Street on April 11.

Polly Walsh stopped her vehicle at a red traffic light. While waiting for pedestrians to cross the intersection, two men accosted her.

“One of the men opened the passenger side door of my car and tried to grab my handbag, which was wedged between the driver’s seat and my car’s console.”

Mrs Walsh’s first instinct was to grab hold of her bag. A tug of war between her and the perpetrator ensued and she noticed another man at the driver’s side of the car.

“The second man proceeded to punch and push me up against the steering wheel. He did that twice, before the second man managed to steal my bag,” she said.

Shouting at the top of her voice, Mrs Walsh was desperate for help.

She was shocked at the brazen attack and even more appalled because bystanders who allegedly witnessed the incident, turned a blind eye and left her helpless and violated.

“After the commotion in the car, a couple heard me screaming and the woman’s husband gave chase.”

The Samaritan managed to catch up with the suspect, but not before Mrs Walsh’s purse was emptied, the handbag discarded and the perpetrator making a run for it.

“He took every last cent in my purse,” said an emotional Mrs Walsh.

The victim and her husband live on a farm on the outskirts of Newcastle, and it was the first time she was attacked and robbed.

“In my whole life I have never been a victim of crime until now,” said a shocked Mrs Walsh.

Apart from the shock and anxiety, she was thankful she was not hurt too much.

Mrs Walsh was extremely thankful to the couple who heard her cry for help and promptly came to her rescue.

“To the couple, I want to thank you for helping me. It’s a pity I did not get your names, but from the bottom of my heart, thank you again,” she concluded.
