St Dominic’s hails the mighty book

Tanita Fernandes and Tumi Masange will remember this day fondly.

PARADISE – Neil Gaiman was once quoted as saying: “A book is a dream you hold in your hand.”

On March 24, St Dominic’s Newcastle celebrated Literature Day; the one day of the year learners got the opportunity to place themselves in someone else’s shoes.

Teacher, Su-Rita Venter explained more about what led to this celebration.

“We originally decided to celebrate Literature Day with the goal of motivating learners to read more and find their passion for reading, due to its many benefits.”

These benefits can include memory improvement, discipline, improving concentration and breeding good cognitive abilities.

Yet there was something more the St Dominic’s teachers did not expect.

“On March 24, we saw learners’ eyes filled with wonder, their faces bright with smiles and laughter. Learners spoke to everyone just to get to know the better. We not only succeeded in motivating more readers, but encouraged them to make new friends.”

The Grave 8V class said it enjoyed Literature Day because it presented a chance to see where other learners’ interests lay, helped them step out of the comfort zone and experience another’s life.

In addition, approximately R1 600 and three boxes of books were collected on the day, to be donated to the less fortunate.

“There is nothing more precious than seeing learners’ imaginations flow and their dreams grow. On Literature Day, the learners did not only dress up as a literary hero, but became a hero to those who cannot afford the wonder of books.”
