Newcastle Mall celebrates five years of shopping bliss

The Newcastle Mall management team: centre manager Hester Malan, marketing manager Beulah Rajkumar, exhibitions co-ordinator Abigail Raghoo, receptionist Sharne Kriel and operations manager Riaan Kritzinger.

Newcastle Mall will be celebrating its fifth birthday on March 29.

Festivities to mark the jovial occasion will take place from March 24 to April 1.

Celebrations will kick off with a competition, where shoppers can enter their till slips for an entry into a lucky draw.

“Every till slip qualifies for one entry, and there are unlimited entries and no qualifying spend,” said marketing manager, Beulah Rajkumar.

The draw will be on April 1, when one lucky entrant will win a trip for a family of four to the Ndaka Safari Lodge at Nambiti Big 5 Private Game Reserve.

While shoppers enter their till slips during this period, vying for the win, they can also enjoy a slice of cake on March 29, compliments of Checkers.

A children’s play area will be available at the food court from March 27 until April 17. Newcastillians will also have the opportunity to greet Madagascar characters, Mart, Melman and Gloria on April 1.

Newcastle Mall has been a huge success since doors opened on March 29, 2012, and has grown to become the dominant regional shopping centre in Northern Natal and surrounding areas.

On the average, a staggering 461 341 Newcastillians and shoppers from Madadeni, oSizweni, Dundee, Utrecht, Vryheid, Volksrust and Ladysmith, frequent the 39 000m² mall per month.

Indicative of the mall’s impact was the turnover of more than R1-billion in 2016.

It is thus quite obvious that the mall contributes hugely to Newcastle becoming a fast growing manufacturing hub, and continuous inward investment promises a sustainable economic environment for the mall and its tenants.

The mall itself is contributing to the economic uplifting of the region by ensuring the direct and indirect employment of local people.

The centre has also become the cornerstone for community activity through community involvement in socially responsible and consumer-centred marketing activities and related projects.

A highlight was when Newcastle Mall took top honours at the SA Council of Shopping Centres annual Retail Design and Development Awards at the council’s 17th annual congress in Sandton in September 2013. Newcastle Mall scooped the award for the best new shopping centre development in South Africa, as well as winning the overall Spectrum Award.

Plans for the next five years include a vision to maintain the growth and the mall’s status as the dominant regional shopping centre in the area, as well as to maintain community involvement, and to continuously improve customers’ overall shopping experience.

“We would also like to use this opportunity to sincerely thank the community of Newcastle and surrounding areas for their continuous support and contribution, without which our impressive growth would not have been possible,” Mrs Rajkumar concluded.
