Gun wielding suspect charged with attempted murder

NEWCASTLE CBD – A man was shot in the arm outside a pub in the CBD at around 8pm on Saturday, February 25.

The bar’s security provider was alerted and arrived on the scene and summoned police.

According to the pub owner, an argument ensued outside the bar between two men, and the victim was shot.

Spokesperson for SAPS Communication Liaison and Marketing, Lizzy Arumugam said: “The victim was shot in the arm and the suspect was assaulted by the community and sustained head injuries. They were [both] taken to Madadeni Hospital and discharged.”

Allegedly, the perpetrator was overpowered by community members who disarmed him.

The police confirmed both the victim and suspect are 25 years old, and the firearm was licensed.

“The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on February 28. He is remanded in police custody and the case was adjourned to March 31. A case of attempted murder was opened.”
