FERNOWOOD – The ArcelorMittal Soccer League officially kicked off last Friday, with six matches taking place at Fernwood Sports Grounds, Hope High School and Ferrum High School.

The league consists of 12 teams from different departments of ArcelorMittal.

The league was initiated by General Manager, Charlton Whitcher, to bridge the gap between management and employees, promoting teamwork and inclusiveness.

The teams will play a total of 121 games, with the mid-season expected to be at the end of June and the league most likely ending in September.

Admin matched up against Steel Plant on the Fernwood Grounds. With a tightly contested first half, team Admin displayed quality passing, which resulted in Dulani Mazibuko opening the scoring, with a well-struck shot from within the 18-yard box after receiving a great pass from the right wing.

Steel Plant, however, did not rest on their laurels and a movement from the left resulted in a cross being sent over to Siyabonga Mweli who smacked the ball in from an acute angle.

The score at half-time was one all.

The second half was hard fought, and midfielder, Ilya Zhitin, showed great skill that resulted in the ball getting to Sbu Makhubu who catapulted it into the net.

It was not to be for Admin, as Steel Plant snatched an equaliser in the last seconds of the game, courtesy of Phumlani Sangweni. Despite both teams giving it their all, the final score was two all.

Also playing at Fernwood Sports Grounds, Sinterplant played against Materials Handling.

Both sides missed glaring opportunities and the first half closed with no goals scored.

The second half was off to a sound start. Sinterplant took advantage of some poor defending and Kwenza Gambu ensured Sinterplant took a well deserved lead.

The Materials Handling team’s efforts were in vain as the final whistle blew and a jubilant Sinterplant celebrated on the pitch, as they secured a one-nil victory.

Materials Handling supporters indicated that it was still early days in the league and they were indeed the team to watch.
