Vagrants allegedly live in vacant police houses located in Newcastle CBD

The Department of Works will renovate two houses in Allen Street.

NEWCASTLE CBD – Allegedly, vagrants took up residence in two vacant homes in Allen Street.

A business owner in the area claimed the illegal occupants were responsible for burglaries and thefts in the CBD.

Communication Liaison and Marketing spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, confirmed both homes belonged to the police department.

“Both houses were handed to the Department of Public Works for renovation purposes in terms of Government policy.”

Ms Arumugam denied vagrants were living in the homes, despite the presence of a mattress and items of clothing inside.

“The police do frequent patrols at both houses and there is no proof of the claims that vandals were involved in breaking into business and nearby homes.”

“Once Public Works has done the renovations to both houses, they will be handed back to the police,” Ms Arumugam said.

Vagrants on the property can be reported to Newcastle Police on 034 314 6437.
