Poets fall in love with their craft at Blackrock Casino

Blackrock staff arrive in style: Xolile Moyo and Babongile Mtshali.

ARBOR PARK – Local poets are celebrating their love of the spoken word.

Many joined Durban-based comedian, Mondli Mzizi on stage at Blackrock Casino on Friday night, to showcase their craft and way with words.

This maiden poetry event was titled ‘Ubambolwam’.

The Zulu word is translated as ‘my soul mate’, and the quality of poets showed many had indeed fallen head over heels for the art of speech craft.

Event co-organiser, Zama Msibi explained this fresh concept.

He said it was a chance to elevate poets in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, by exposing them to the same platforms as established poets from Durban.

The event also gave poetry lovers some fine entertainment.

“After a long time based in Durban and organising poetry shows with my partner, Lethiwe Shabalala, we felt it is now time to give back to our hometown that has minimal shows of this nature.”

Mr Msibi said many of the local poets were initially shy in front of seasoned poets, but received standing ovations for their performances on Friday.

It was proof to him, only platform and content were needed to compete.

Proceedings got under way thanks to the jazzy tunes of local band, Em-pulse, after which notable and amateur poets weaved a story with their words.

And the poets certainly hit the right notes.

Following the event, Mr Msibi said two local poets were invited for an interview by Lungisani Mavundla of uKhozi FM, and another invited for a performance for uKhozi in Durban.

At the end of the day, what was most important was for poets to learn.

“We are launching the Mzansi Brewed Poetry Jam Session on March 12, from 2pm at Shortleft in Section 5, Madadeni.”

The event is open to the public.

Another show is set to be hosted in April, and Mr Msibi and the team are working hard to ensure all locals are even more prepared to leave audiences speechless.
