NERD NEST: Tech demo builds more hype for Borderlands 3

The awesome art style of the Borderlands series is rendered perfectly on the Unreal Engine 4.

If you know your games, you’ve heard news of a direct Borderlands sequel.

However, we got a little taste of what the upcoming title will look like at the recent Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2017, which concluded today (March 3) in San Francisco.

One of GDC’s highlights was a tech demo from developer, Gearbox Software.

Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, showed off a clip in the classic Borderlands art style, rendered beautifully on the Unreal Engine 4.

“I do want to remind you this is not a video game, this is a technology demonstration,” Pitchford emphasised. “Some or all of the technologies that I demonstrated may be utilised for future Gearbox Software video games.”

The demo featured a number of production assets, including what seems to be a turbine or engine, and female character whose face has been deliberately obscured.

In fact, Pitchford even alluded to the importance of this character.

“Forget about that we’ve cleverly placed the camera here so her shoulder pad is occluding her face. Forget about her face and worry about the technology for now.”

While there’s no provisional release date on the new Borderlands title, which may not be ‘Borderlands 3’, Pitchford has confirmed work on the game has begun.

More hints can be seen in Easter eggs, within Gearbox’s hero shooter, Battleborn.
