Pastor Thomas Beneke is dedicated to serving the community of Newcastle

Bringing the Gospel of Salvation, assisting the needy and going the extra mile to uplift society are just some of the ways the Lord’s faithful servant, Pastor Thomas Beneke, makes Newcastle a better place.

Pastor Beneke relocated to Newcastle from a small town called Lüneberg, on the border of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, in May 2015.

After matriculating from Vryheid High School, he studied Theology at the University of Pretoria, College Oberursel in Germany, University of Leipzig in Germany and Concordei Seminary in the United States. Pastor Beneke interned at a congregation in Germany before he was sent to Newcastle by the Mission of Lutheran Churches to minister to the spiritual needs of Newcastle’s Lutheran community. He has been the Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church ever since.

“I grew up on a farm. My father was a farmer and my mother a teacher. My childhood was simple, but wonderful. I have two brothers and four sisters.”

Pastor Beneke married the love of his life, Liesel in 2009. The couple have been together for 11 years, and have two children: three-year-old Sophie, and five-month-old Daniel.

He feels blessed to serve in the congregation.

“There are times when it gets tough, but it has been the most satisfying project I have ever encountered.”

One of the biggest challenges he faced, was the long and arduous studies in several languages. However, today he values and appreciates it.

Pastor Beneke’s secret to success is finding joy in the vocation God gave him. Although he is a people pleaser and hates to disappoint, his parents greatly influenced him to follow their example of being strong, but humble.

“One of the main things I learnt from my parents was always to be dedicated in whatever you do.”

The person Pastor Beneke admires the most is his 85-year-old grandfather, who still wakes up at 5am every day to translate books. “My grandfather knows seven different languages fluently. He worked as a pastor and teacher all his life, and still has the drive to work even in his old age. His kind heart, simple approach to life, and his honesty are what make him so special to me.”

Pastor Beneke is also a beekeeper and loves spending his spare time in the serenity of nature, hiking, gardening, and escaping the realities of the world.

His words of wisdom for a happy life are: “Remember the big picture of life and find joy in the steps you must take to get there. We must always remember the purpose of life is to serve others, not only financially, but to use the skills and talents you develop to serve those around you.”
