ANC takes Ward 6 in by-elections

The ANC has safely taken ANC Ward 6 during the recent by-election.

NEWCASTLE – The African National Congress (ANC) has clinched the victory for all three by-elections held in Kwazulu-Natal on Wednesday, November 9.

The by-elections for Ward 1 in uMuziwabantu Municipality (Harding), Ward 20 in the Alfred Duma Municipality (Ladysmith) and Ward 6 in the Newcastle Municipality were all contested by the Democratic Alliance, but despite the political party’s efforts, the ANC managed to secure victory.

Thembi Mbongo, the Ward 6 candidate that was meant to run as councillor was gunned down in front of her family in July.

ANC spokesman, Mduseni Ntuli said the overwhelming support from the respective communities, laid to rest accusations that the political party’s support was on the decline.

“This is a strong message and a foretaste of the 2019 general election.”

However, DA national spokeswoman, Phumzile van Damme said in every by-election the DA contested, it was seen that the DA support has grown and increased its vote share with the ANC.

“In KwaZulu Natal, the DA achieved a surge of growth in Ward 20 Alfred Duma Municipality, up from 24.55% in August 2016 to 35.97% yesterday and bringing the ANC down to just 50% in this ward,” said Ms van Damme.

KwaZulu-Natal cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube welcomed the election results and applauded the fact that the by-elections had run smoothly.
