Four men arrested for hijacking

NEWCASTLE –  A meter taxi driver experienced a traumatic night, after he was hijacked by four men on Wednesday night.

He allegedly offered the men a lift from a fuelling station in Boundary Road, to a farm just outside Newcastle.

However, upon stopping outside a farm, everything turned sour.

One of the suspects, who was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle, reached over the seat and stabbed the driver in the neck.

The four men proceeded to steal the driver’s two cellphones and money.

The driver ran away to escape further injury.

“One of the men got behind the steering wheel and drove towards Fernwood,” said an unofficial source.

The perpetrators allegedly drove to Dundee and Ladysmith, when the vehicle broke down.

“They made their way back to Newcastle and were arrested due to team work from both the Ladysmith and Newcastle police officers,” said the source.

SAPS Corporate Communications officer, Lizzy Arumugam confirmed the suspects were arrested and vehicle was recovered in Elandslaagte.

Police investigations continue.
