Maths Tutor: Master Maths
Describe your business/profession to
the general public.
Master Maths is a progressive method of teaching mathematics. Our unique way of integrating personal contact from tutors with interactive computer lessons, sets us apart from other maths tuitions. Our lessons are authored by highly competent mathematics teachers, who interpret the South African curriculum and convert it to a more user-friendly format. Lesson content is regularly updated according to changes to the curriculum and the CAPS document. Our system allows pupils to work through the curriculum at their own pace and at their own level of ability. Learning is reinforced and evaluated both on computer and through worksheets done in writing and submitted for assessment. With better understanding comes improved marks and confidence. The end result is a positive, motivated, independent pupil working towards the career of their choice. What more could you ask for?
What does it take to be successful in this career?
Tutors are required to be highly proficient in Mathematics and/or Science. A good Grade 12 mark or completion of a year of studies at a tertiary institution is a prerequisite. Alternatively, candidates should have equivalent experience in the field of Maths and/or Science. The perfect candidates should be motivated by success in their job. They should be people-persons who are able to easily interact with young children and teenagers.
What do you have to study, both at secondary and tertiary level, to qualify for this career?
No prior experience is necessary for our tutoring jobs as we provide in-house training. We do require our tutors have a minimum of 70 per cent in Maths and/ or Science.
What are the benefits of running a business in a growing economy such as Newcastle?
I find the Irish catchphrase from the 1960s very applicable here: “A rising tide lifts all boats”. With Newcastle morphing into a city, enterprise and business will also prosper. The key is to ensure the customer receives stellar service. Master Maths is up to the challenge, priding ourselves in excellent service delivery, with an equally exemplary product!
Photos: Valerie Roodt completed her
matric in 2012 and obtained
an A in Maths Literacy. She
started working at Master
Maths in 2013 as a junior
tutor, focusing on pupils up
to Grade 9. However, she has
improved her Maths so much
while working at Master Maths
and is comfortable with the
syllabus that she has enrolled
with us in order to upgrade
her Maths at the end of this
year through IEB. She is
therefore a full-time tutor with
Master Maths, but is also one
of our rewrite students.
Photo: Daryl Britz is an old student of Master Maths. He started attending extra lessons in his Grade 9 year (2010) and stayed with us until he matriculated (2013). In 2014 he started studying at Majuba College to pursue a career as a millwright. In 2015 he decided to complete his studies part-time time and started working as a tutor at Master Maths and Master Science Newcastle. He is currently doing his N4 and finds that tutoring at Master Maths and Master Science helps him in his own endeavours.
