Five lives were lost when an SUV and a light motor vehicle collided on the R621, between Newcastle and Dannhauser, at about 8.30am yesterday morning.

ER24 paramedics initially reported four occupants of the vehicle, including teenagers, who were declared dead on the scene. It was later discovered a fifth body was found in the same car.

News24 reported; three pupils from Ziphakamiseni High School in the Amajuba district were among the victims, MEC Peggy Nkonyeni said.

“The two pupils were attending Grade 12, while the other one was attending Grade 10. One other passenger was on his way to register for admission at Amajuba TVET College.”

As reported by sister publication, Northern Natal Courier, it is believed the Mayor of Dannhauser, Jabu Phakathi’s 18-year-old daughter also died in the collision.

Paramedic and Fire and Rescue teams also attended to a woman found lying next to the SUV. Reports indicated she could have been the driver of the SUV. She was later identified as a teacher from the Siphuthando High School, in Emafusini, Dannhauser. First responders said she was in a critical condition, and was treated at the scene, before being transported to Madadeni Hospital for further medical care.

Contrary to previous reports, the women is not deceased but rather recuperating at the Madadeni Hospital.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victims and speedy recovery to the injured.
