PENSIONERS: No illicit deductions, SASSA states

Reports of unlawful deductions from pension payouts has resulted in the establishment of a national syndicate.

SASSA Newcastle has received no reports of dodgy deductions.

Officials from the local branch of the South African Social Security Agency said this in response to questions around claims of illicit deductions of pensioners’ grants nationwide.

These were concealed as transactions of airtime and prepaid electricity.

In most cases, reports indicated, the grant recipients had not authorised the deductions, let alone received services they were charged for.

“The situation seems to be normal for now,” explained a senior official from SASSA Newcastle.

Another way in which recipients were said to be being fleeced, was by scammers posing as SASSA officials, inviting residents to purchase the “new” card.

There is no such thing, it was confirmed.

“The services of SASSA are free.”

Speaking to national media, SASSA’s national spokesman, Kgomoco Diseko explained recently the SASSA card remained the logo on a white background, only available from a SASSA office.

The above claims have resulted in a task team established to investigate.

To date, a SASSA press statement declared, many hundreds of officials, money lenders and subsidiary workers, responsible for fraudulent behaviour, had been arrested.

SASSA has also proclaimed it will reimburse any recipient to fall victim to the scam.

For more information and tips to keep grant payouts safe, residents are urged to call 012 400 2322 or 080 060 1011.

“We are winning the fight against fraud and corruption, and we will continue to learn and improve our systems,” said Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini boldly.
