SPORT: Bowlers roll into the spring season

A number of competitions have taken place in recent weeks, keeping Newcastle Bowling Club bowlers busy on the greens.

The first of the season’s completed club competitions was the Men’s and Ladies’ Fours.

The Ladies’ Fours was won by Michelle Steele, Marie Botha, Esther Willemse and Carien Coetzee with the runners-up being Samantha Shaw, Nan Winterbach, Lindsay McArthur and Martie Pepler.

Men’s Fours winners were Ron Howe, Billy Nicholas, Colin Brodrick and Hennie le Roux and the runners-up Stephen Shaw, Mike Martens, Marius Bouwer Junior and Willem Samwell.

The monthly FedAuto meat competition played last Saturday, was won by Ron Howe, Lou Roux, Gert Roos and Jean Ball, with Alice Howe, Marius Bouwer Senior, Marius Bouwer Junior and Mart Browning the runners-up.

A number of Newcastle teams also travelled to Vryheid BC last weekend to participate in its annual Spring Tournament.

Fritz and Marie Botha, Trevor and Sue Hutchinson played consistent bowls throughout the weekend to deservedly finish in second place after being counted out on shot difference by the winners, Miskiet Ferreira (Empangeni), Alta Roos, Margaret van Heusden and Betina Malan (Vryheid).

The next club competition is the Club Trips and members are reminded the draw closes on the Friday evening before the competition.
