Golfers swing special donations for Esperanza

Little Candice Scheepers joined mom Sarah Scheepers at the Esperanza Golf Day to bring in an element of fun on a workday.

Golfers gathered by the dozens to tee off for the Esperanza Sponsored Golf Day, on Saturday, July 8 at the Newcastle Golf Club.

The annual event helped raise much needed funds for the school with s total of 120 golfers participating in the golf day.

Excitement filled the air throughout the day as golfers made their way along the 18 hole course, with numerous watering holes strategically placed along the fairways to quench the golfers’ thirsts.

School principal, Jennifer Pillay said the school was immensely grateful to the club and all sponsors who made the golf day a success each year.

“Every donation helps us reach needy children in the community. We also thank Deon and Julia de Beer for their assistance and contribution,” said Pillay.

Many companies, Newcastillians and out-of-towners ensured the event was a success, with raffles and top notch prizes for the golfers such as gift vouchers, heaters, biltong, wine and more.

An auction was also held which included a hamper to the value of about R 7 000. The winner of the auction, Japie Dantuma, bid a whopping R 8 300 which was donated to the school.

Naas Rautenbach managed to hit a hole-in-one on the 16th hole, and instead of a round of drinks for the club members as per custom, he opted to generously donate that money to the school.

Pillay thanked the community, the organisers and sponsors for their help and effort in assisting the school with a fund-raiser of this magnitude.

“I also thank the staff at Esperanza for their unwavering support and hardwork. We at Esperanza Special Needs School believe in touching hearts, changing lives and making a difference one child at a time. Esperanza means hope,” concluded Pillay.

The funds raised will contribute to the upliftment and betterment of the school.
