The Madadeni Regional court sentenced a man to 25 years behind bars on June 6 for raping a 15-year-old girl on March 17, 2012.

SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam, said the accused lured the teen to his house by asking her to collect her fathers tools.

“When the girl got to his house, the accused covered her mouth and nose with a cloth, hence causing her to lose consciousness.”

“When she finally regained consciousness, she found herself in the accused’s bedroom. She was naked and bleeding,” said Arumugam.

The suspect raped her again, and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about what happened.

After the ordeal, the young girl returned home.

Out of fear for her life, the victim refrained from telling her family what happened.

Instead she decided to write it down in her diary.

Three weeks after the rape, the victim’s mother came across the diary and decided to read through it, not knowing what she was about to discover.

“The diary entry was evident the victim was traumatised.”

Her mother immediately reported the incident to police.

The case was handed over to the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

“The 35-year-old suspect was arrested, but was granted bail shortly afterwards.”

“The accused failed to attend a court hearing in April 2017, consequently, leading to a warrant for his arrest. He was tracked down and re-arrested.”

“He was guilty of raping the teen on April 17, 2017.”

While the teen has lived in fear for the past five years, she can now finally move on knowing her rapist is behind bars.
