Breakwaters gets its final revenge

LADYSMITH – The local angling season drew to a dramatic close on April 23.

The Angling Professional League (APL) season wrapped up with the AA Tours Grand Challenge, pitting Ladysmith and Breakwaters angling clubs against each other.

Each team has earned one trophy this season.

While Ladysmith has enjoyed an impressive debut as part of the APL, Breakwaters was still smarting from defeat a few weeks earlier.

This set the tone for a thrilling final season encounter.

“As each fish was weighed, there was joy for those fish which were over the 500 gram weight limit, while those under the weight received an equally loud cheer, depending on which team the angler belonged,” organisers explained.

And true to expectation, the competition turned out to be a nail-biter.

Ladysmith was the first to weigh in and scored 15 points, followed by Breakwaters which earned the same number of points with one basket to spare.

With the final two points, Breakwaters made the narrowest of saves.

The club thus ends the season as both the VME League champion and victors of the Grand Challenge, and Ladysmith ends as Transnat Knock Out champion.

“Congratulations to both these teams for displaying sheer determination and sportsmanship, despite the intense rivalry.”

Wayne Oosthuizen of Breakwaters was crowned Angler of the Day with seven individual points, taking home the orange cap, trophy and cash prize.

Other winners have already received their dues for angling prowess this season.

In conclusion, the management and organisers of the APL thanked its major sponsors, members, families and supporters for an exciting, yet gruelling season.

Anglers now take a well deserved break, ahead of the new season starting on August 1.
