ITEC Freespool crowned league champion

Reeling in the heaviest barbel for the day, Junaid Iqbal receives a cash prize of R250 from Shane Singh.

NEWCASTLE – The fifth and final Top Parts league of the Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA) is done and dusted.

The event took place at Sanford Islands, Zones A, B, D and E on Sunday, April 23.

The angling of the day started slow with fish hard to come by. The underwater vegetation left anglers frustrated, as they had to overcome stuck lines and in the process lost fish and traces.

Docrats Angling Club went head to head with Glencoe Angling Club in Zones A and B and emerged victorious with 19 points to Glencoe’s 1 point.

The mighty Itec Freespool battled against Riverside Angling Club in Zone D and shocked the opponents with their catches, beating them with the score line of 45 points to 6.

Chelmsford Angling Club took on newcomers, Endumeni Angling Club and won the day’s battle by scoring 25 points to 3.

At the end of the day, the defending champion, Itec Freespool was crowned League Champion for the 2016/2017 season. The club was unbeaten for the season.

Dawie Carrolissen of Freespool reeled in the heaviest carp of the day, weighing 3.45kg, and Junaid Iqbal of Docrats pulled in the heaviest barbel of 3.07kg.

Both anglers earned themselves R250 cash.

The knockout final will take place on the May 7 at Richgate. This year will see a three-way final between defending knockout champions, Itec Freespool, Docrats and Riverside. The Top Five Compo will be the last event for all clubs towards the end of the season, where the Top 5 anglers of each affiliated club will compete for a grand cash prize of R3000.
