South Africans react to Rachel Dolezal

Nkechi Amare Diallo, formerly known as Rachel Dolezal is currently in South Africa for a speaking engagement at the inaugural event of Quest for Non Racial South African Society Dialogue (QfNRSASD). The event takes place at the Johannesburg Theatre on Wednesday, 19 April.

The American activist and former African Studies Instructor is currently on a book tour promoting her In Full Color: Finding My Place in a Black and White World. In the memoir Rachel tells her story of identifying as a black person even though she was biologically born to white parents.

She received backlash in 2015 when her Caucasian parents stated publicly that Dolezal is a white woman passing as black. This caused a major media frenzy at the time and Dolezal responded to questions around her identity:

She resigned from her post at NAACP and in October 2016 she legally changed her name to Nkechi Amare Diallo in order to get a better chance to find work. She later clarified that she still uses her name as a public persona. By early this year she had claimed she was living on food stamps, estranged from most of her friends, and on the brink of homelessness after having no success in finding another job.

The dust seemed to settle until she returned to the spotlight with her new book.

Dolezal tweeted this morning:  “If you’re in South Africa ???? I hope to see you soon! Seating limited. RSVP to:

This tweet has since been removed after an onslaught of memes and Twitter responses from outraged South Africans. Some have even begun a petition to block her from speaking.

Here is how some South Africans have responded to news of Dolezal’s visit:
