Mineral and Petroleum Resources draft bill in the spotlight

The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Draft Amendment Bill came under scrutiny last Thursday during a public meeting in oSizweni.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development and Tourism Portfolio Committee, the amendment was necessary to remove ambiguities in existing legislation.

KZN Legislature advisor, Sthembiso Nsele said it would stimulate the economy.

“Minerals and petroleum play a role in securing energy and food security. We are also addressing the enforcement of housing for mine workers.”

Black Economic Empowerment was also brought up during the meeting, as the government would like to see national growth spread evenly among the community, as well as more Black ownership in mining.

While the meeting was not well supported by the community, guests did find the discussions informative.

The financial implications of the Draft Amended Bill will be finalised in consultation with National Treasury.
